Garneton North 20 MW Solar PV Project: E&S Documents Disclosure

As part of Zambia’s energy diversification efforts and the broader objectives of the GET FiT Zambia programme, InnoVent is developing a 20 MW solar PV plant in Garneton, Kitwe, located in the Copperbelt Province. The project is being implemented through a dedicated Zambian company, InnoVent Garneton North Solar Limited. This project is one of six utility-scale solar PV plants awarded under the GET FiT Zambia initiative in 2019, which aims to attract private investment into renewable energy and strengthen the country’s power sector.

GET FiT Zambia is implemented by the Ministry of Energy with support from the German Government through KfW, and is designed to facilitate the addition of up to 220 MW of renewable energy capacity from IPPs. The current 120 MW solar tender marks the first phase of this programme and is a key contribution to addressing Zambia’s ongoing energy crisis, supporting the shift toward cleaner, cost-reflective energy solutions.

As part of our commitment to transparency and in line with the requirements of our financing partner, the African Development Bank, we are publicly disclosing the Environmental and Social documentation for the Garneton North  Solar project. These documents have been prepared in accordance with both Zambian regulatory requirements and international standards.

This project seems like an important step for Zambia’s transition toward cleaner and more reliable energy sources. I appreciate the focus on transparency and international environmental standards, especially with the involvement of the African Development Bank. The development of solar energy in the Copperbelt Province could also create long-term economic and social benefits for local communities.
