InnoVent Diaz: work on Namibia’s 2nd wind farm is in full swing

The InnoVent Diaz project is the company’s second wind farm currently under construction on Namibia’s Atlantic coast. This 44 MW wind farm comprising 11 turbines.

Park challenges

This 44 MW wind farm will produce 230 GWh of renewable electricity per year. This represents around 6% of Namibia’s electricity demand and 13% of the country’s production, enabling a significant reduction in electricity imports. In terms of emissions, this wind farm will prevent the release of 200,000 tonnes of CO₂ per year. As Namibia mainly imports electricity generated from coal, this park will save 89,700,000 kg of coal per year. The InnoVent Diaz project will thus contribute to the country’s energy mix and Namibia’s energy independence.

Moreover, this project requires the involvement of a large number of stakeholders from different sectors, and we have chosen to work mainly with local companies and employees. This initiative will create jobs in Namibia and contribute to the country’s economic growth.

Parts being unloaded

The Da Kang left the port of Lusi in China with the rotors, hubs, nacelles and blades on 9 January. It arrived in the port of Lüderitz on 16 February, and unloading soon got under way. This large-scale shipment will enable us to continue building the wind farm, which is scheduled to come on stream in the last quarter of 2025.

InnoVent’s investment

The Diaz project is the second wind farm to be built by the company in Namibia, but represents InnoVent’s seventh Namibian renewable energy farm. The Lüderitz wind farm is InnoVent’s largest investment in Africa. In total, InnoVent has invested 2.5 billion Namibian dollars and has 75 MW of solar and wind power capacity.

This wind farm is being built partly through crowdfunding. A Lendosphere fund has been set up to finance the next phase of the wind farm’s construction. Click here to find out more.

Progress on the site

The roads, platforms and foundations are nearing completion. Nampower, the grid operator, has already started work on the connection to the electricity grid. The parts for four wind turbines were stored at our Ombepo site and have now been repatriated to the Diaz site. The towers for the other seven turbines are ready and will be delivered to the construction site towards the end of May. Installation of the internal network will begin in May.
