Mechanical assembly work and electrical panel connection work have begun on the site of the Abéché solar farm of 20 ha for 5 MW. The connection work has started in parallel. The first MW should be commissioned by the 1st of April. This project, realization of Chad’s energy mix policy, was the subject of the visit of the Chadian Minister of Energy, Ramatou Mahamat Houtouin.
The solar power plant will consist of 21,600 polycrystalline panels installed on trackers, allowing the sun to travel from east to west and thus increase production by 25% compared to a fixed system.
This facility is expected to produce 14,482,300 kWh per year, which will cover the electricity needs of the city of Abéché (approximately 80,000 inhabitants). The Abéché solar power plant will initially be coupled to existing generators and will save 5,000,000 litres of diesel oil annually.

The situation in Chad
Chad’s energy situation is tense. According to the World Bank, only 8% of the population has access to electricity. In 2018, Chad undertook reforms to reach 53% of the country’s electricity by 2030, including 20% for rural territories. The government has set a target of 20% renewable energy in the energy mix. In Chad, the sun is shining between 2,000 and 3,250 hours a year, enabling the Abéché solar power plant to help achieve this goal.
